About Naz Kaya

My art invites the viewer to experience emotions and tastes of color that are long forgotten and remembered once again. “Art is a form of visual communication... It’s a visual communication, yet it touches to all of our senses." The use of bold colors, which sometimes contrast and sometimes are in perfect harmony, evoke strong emotion and nostalgia in the viewer. The placement and design of the geometry in the paintings also offer a sense of balance and direction to the emotional ride.

I like to use vibrant colors, distinct shapes and complex geometry with pure color to express my thoughts and feelings. The concept of my art is “visualizing and seeing emotions“ through my paintings. At the conceptual level, I use “nostalgia and karma” as a few examples of subjects in my art.

I work spontaneously and rarely begin with a set plan in mind. I let each painting evolve intuitively as I build each layer of paint. While the majority of my work is on canvas, I do sometimes paint on wood or on archival paper. I work with materials that allow me to build layers on a surface. I use primarily acrylic paints. On my collage works, I often incorporate graphite, oil pastels, markers, gold leaf, paint and ink. Each piece is then finished off with a layer of gloss varnish to enhance the colors and bring depth and also protect the surface of the painting.

I also do commission work. People sometimes have a certain size or color scheme in mind, or want something similar to a piece I might already have sold. Hence, commissions make it easy for any given parameters.

Education

After studying at Bilkent University and receiving my Master of Fine Arts degree in Interior Architecture & Environmental Design, I moved to the United States in 1998. I earned my PhD in Environmental Design at Oklahoma State University and have taught as a faculty member at The University of Georgia, specializing in color and design for several years.

In 2006, I moved to Houston and started working as a full-time artist and began showing at juried exhibitions and participated in group shows. For a few years, I lived in Far East Asia, Indonesia, Singapore and had my first solo exhibition – “Inspiration: Transition” in Jakarta Indonesia. My artworks have found new homes and collectors not only in the United States, but also in Europe, China, Australia, Turkey, Dubai, Indonesia, and Singapore. I am so lucky to be able to do what I love to do and art is my passion and the purpose of my life.
