About Maria Rogers

I would describe myself mostly as a self-taught artist but art education has included initially private tuition in portrait painting and later a 3-year course of experimental textile techniques at Windsor College where gained a Higher Diploma with Distinction. That experience involved using a lot of varied media which I enjoyed and continue to love and experiment with. Hence I prefer to be a mixed-media artist.
Since gaining a studio at Wimbledon Art Studios in 2015, I have exhibited regularly there. In 2020 a work was shortlisted for the Green & Stone summer exhibition “Connections”. Exhibitions have included the Mall Galleries (Society of Women Artists) and The South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts. I was delighted to have passed the first round for entry to The Royal Hibernian Exhibition, Dublin (2020) with "Somebody Loves Me” and also for The English Art Club, Mall Galleries, with “About to Rain….” I received a Special Merit in March 2020 for the painting "Winter" from Light Space Time online art gallery.
My work is collected in the UK, Europe and USA.
I have drawn and painted since a child and has become a way of life. It is a form of communication and I use it to interpret and share what excites me or I find amusing. It can be something small, for instance if I am looking at a landscape, it wouldn’t necessarily be the panorama but a branch of a tree that I might want to explore. However, everyday experiences/objects are currently delighting me. I prefer to work in an abstract or semi-abstract style as this gives more freedom. I use acrylic paint because it is “sturdy” and stands up well to vigorous (or rough!) treatment….and dries quickly! My subject matter varies as often I am more interested in a medium other than paint and my work can be about that and how far I can take it (e.g. fibre).

Inspiration has been drawn from the Dhunami teachings (dhunami.org) and researching artists such as Mach, Matisse, Klimt, Sonya Delaunay and Claes Oldenburg.

Education

Mostly self-taught in drawing and painting from an early age with private tuition in portrait painting in Dublin. Maria also extended her curiosity about media by studying textile art at East Berkshire College, Windsor Campus where she received Distinction in her final studies 2003.
