Harry Cartwright is a British artist, living and working in London. His work combines painting, photography and print making to create graphically vibrant compositions on canvas and paper. Taking aesthetic cues and references from the worlds of cinema and advertising, Cartwright creates hybrid scenes, combining images from his own personal archives and travels, with imagery and references from American popular culture. We have a glimpse into a world which fascinates Harry, that of fast cars, palm tree lined beaches and beautiful people, all colliding together onto warm and vivid sun-filled backdrops. California is a place central to his work, a place which has intrigued and excited the artist from an early age; a distant, exotic, far away land which he grew up romanticising about after watching it on TV and the internet. Cartwright’s latest series of work blends these elements together, whilst continuing to blur the line between art and life; between fiction and fact. Creating movie posters for movies which don’t actually exist; inventing everything from the titles, actors, movie production company. The overall aesthetic is cinematically stylised, as though viewed through a filmic lens of nostalgia, depicting a gold tinted era of times gone-by.
