How you see changes what you see. There has always been a space, a separation, between what I see and my experience. I create images from my experience. I share these images and connect with others. For me the drama is between dark and light- the edge, context. Art uses a shape or form to define context. I like to draw a shape-either repeating its context or creating a new one. The Bear collages are part of a larger project called the Great Canadian Spirit. These photocollages mark my return to Canada from Hawaii in 2007. They represent a very different time and place. You can view the whole series at . In the Great Canadian Spirit Series, I borrow the shape of the animal to reframe the space, as pointer or sign of something greater. Most recently I have used my camera as a pencil and brush. The computor as my canvas and the internet as a gallery in addition to the EnglishBay Gallery. My art has its roots in painting. It is influenced by Matisse and Picasso, minimal art, abstract expressionism and pop art. However it has been characterised by the medium of photography since the late 1990s. Important themes in my work include the context of the image, its representative function, its transformation, and its shifting meaning in the context of my art and life. Inusuit Series Inuksuit are welcoming sign posts made of rocks used in the far north of Canada as a guide to good camping sites. They are made from the ground rock they signify. They look like people with arms out stretched. Most recently a version (there is no one specific shape) was used as a symbol for the Vancouver 2010 winter Olympic Games. The image I have created is in the same spirit using found pavement and a painted crosswalk photographed and recreated. These pictures of Inuksuit, made on walks and reorganized to create an ambiguous space for the eye to travel in. This binds the old and new in a dialogue. The Great Canadian Series The Bear collages are part of a larger project called the Great Canadian Spirit. I have always wanted a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Why not a virtual show. I photographed the gallery with the existing paintings I liked.
