About The Artwork
This collage was created for the 2018 Shad Festival held in Lambertville, New Jersey, USA. The original was auctioned off during the festival to help provide scholarships for students pursuing a collegiate career in the arts. The work shows the clear waters of the Delaware River teeming with shad during their annual spring spawning migration. Pieced from over 1000 individual magazine clippings. The clippings were de-acidified and buffered with magnesium bicarbonate before being attached to archival mat board with clear acrylic medium. The finished collage was coated with additional acrylic medium and a UVLS polymer varnish.

I first began working in collage when I wasn't to buy paints and canvas, but after trying other media I still find collage the most satisfying. I like the thought of turning ephemeral, mass-produced magazine images into something unique and lasting. There is a particular flow to certain curves that feels both right and compelling to me, like the sight of a road winding out of sight that beckons me to follow it. Curves appear prominently in my work because I want to take that road, to explore that line, wherever it leads.
