About The Artwork

** Trigger Warning** The canvas of the Dog series unfolds as a poignant exploration of the profound intersection between death and new life—a symbolic journey guided by the whims of the subconscious. The genesis of the Dog series is rooted in the mysterious depths of the artist's psyche. Driven by an unexplained compulsion to paint dogs, the creative process became a conduit for emotions that transcended the conscious mind. Tears flowed without apparent cause, and the canvas became a mirror reflecting the unspoken stirrings within. The series took on a poignant significance when, en route to a Mental Health conference where the artist would later speak as a guest, a heart-wrenching scene unfolded. A creature, a fellow being, met its end in a collision with a car. The visual impact stirred the artist's soul, unearthing a buried childhood memory—the tragic fate of a beloved dog at the tender age of 10. The loss had been so devastating that it had become a turning point in the artist's life, marking a period of profound grief. The childhood trauma had left scars that were, for a time, relegated to the recesses of memory. However, the visceral encounter with a similar scene reignited the emotional echoes of that past sorrow. In the wake of this recollection, the artist confronted the haunting truth—they had harboured a desire for their own life to end in the aftermath of that childhood loss. The Dog series, therefore, metamorphoses into a visual tapestry of healing, resilience, and self-discovery. It becomes a narrative woven not just with paint but with the threads of memory, grief, and the profound impact of childhood experiences on the journey of selfhood. Through the brushstrokes, the artist grapples with the shadows of the past, navigating the delicate balance between death and rebirth—a testament to the transformative power of art as a vessel for introspection and catharsis.

Most of these artworks were created several years ago, creatively processing the early days of learning later in life; I was Autistic (among other brain differences), and the challenges I faced when I made adjustments in my relationships based on my neurobiological differences and diverse needs. The digital artworks were created for a podcast my friend and I had together, where we unpacked our experiences as neurodivergent humans. My approach involves asking probing questions specifically created to uncover complex traumas. I developed a method of self-inquiry and introspection designed to bring awareness to one's inner world. By delving into my subconscious and exploring the reasons behind my choices, beliefs, and emotional responses, I essentially acknowledge and understand myself at a deeper level. This self-awareness is crucial in personal growth, healing, and making positive changes. I work with paint, pencil, ink, spray paint, recycled substrate, fabric, clay, and vintage materials to assist the self-understanding, acknowledging and positive change process. My work involves asking, waiting, watching, quiet listening, inner knowing, storytelling, memories and subconscious answers.
