About The Artwork

I have inherited a philately collection from my late father. Although one part of it did not have any market value, so the conciliated traders told me, I could not throw them away knowing how much time and energy my father invested in collecting and cataloguing post stamps from all around the world. Thinking about what to do with them and considering them for being small pieces of art and representing different stories, I began to browse the internet to learn more about post stamps. It was said that post stamp is the first pre-paid system in usage for widespread communication. I was surprised. Like most of people I was familiar with the pre-paid communication that came with cell phone usage. Further considerations brought me to the insight that the usage of post stamps in combination with the railway network enhanced mass communication worldwide The sequence of associations has pushed to the surface of my memory the painting “Rain, Steam, and Speed - The Great Western Railway” from William Turner that has fascinated me 25 years ago for half an hour when visiting the British National Gallery. I decided to use the same composition for my work in order to pay tribute to the historical industrial revolution.Since I had lot of post stamps I decided to make a mosaic and use them as the sole mean of expression. Each post stamp representing one movement of a brush has leaded me to the dimension of 200x300 cm. Very soon after beginning of applying the stamps on the paper I went out of the material. I was forced to have intense communication with a lot of philatelists and the Croatian Post Authority who has granted me one substantial quantity. After receiving like 20 sacks full with stamps on envelopes and postcards from the philatelists all over the country I first had to separate them with water, dry, order in colours, than in nuances. This process has lasted for almost half a year. The time of applying the stamps with the wallpaper glue, in some areas in 2-3 layers depending of the technique development, lasted for 3 months. Writing letters has become archaic. Nobody waits for the reply anymore. It is expected to get the reply in the so called real time. This collage is a tribute to people who can wait and have patience. Waiting builds patience and patience builds the self-discipline and as a consequence the character of a person.
