About The Artwork

A digital painting of a lone, gnarled tree on the windswept Pacific coast. The sea and shape of the tree are contrasted by the bright white rock formation that the tree precariously clings to. The work uses bold, abstracted, and simplified/minimalist shapes and forms, with a flat, geographic-inspired but starkly contrasting colour palette to achieve depth and perspective.

Anonymous, early-60s traditional artist with a childlike curiosity and a love of learning. I create abstracted compositions that use saturated hues, simple colour palettes, robust shapes, and flat abstracted forms to convey the simplest shapes and component parts of my subject, without being overly concerned with extraneous details, proportions, perspective, and realistic details. My goal creating art is to focus on aesthetics and colours—on the holistic idea of the subject—to draw and paint the most basic essence of the things that interest me. In turn, this allows the viewer to glimpse the simplicity, calmness and fundamental joy present in my chosen subjects. I use digital painting tools like Krita, Rebelle, Painter, Procreate, Pixelmator Pro, and a Wacom tablet to produce vintage illustrative and painterly open edition art prints, often in my preferred square format. I explore the world with a childlike curiosity, and a style that's vaguely defined as "simplified American Modern + storybook illustration + minimalist folk", if that makes any sense. I am inspired by many artists and styles, but especially 20th century artists as diverse as Gershon Benjamin, Don Wiest, Frank H Myers, Nicolas de Staël, Milton Avery, Stanley Whitney, Willard Nash, Raymond E Cote, Stuart Davis, Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, and Charles Sheeler.
