ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Part of my series called "Chimeric Evolution" This series of portraits captures chimeras, blending human, animal, and skeletal components to reflect the complex and speculative trajectory of human evolution. Each figure embodies a hybridization of species, symbolizing the struggle of humanity to adapt to rapid environmental degradation. The skeletal elements serve as a reminder of the inescapable reality of death, while the animal traits hint at the instinctual and primal roots of survival. These chimeras represent the tension between the slow, methodical pace of human evolution and the accelerating damage to our ecosystem, raising questions about whether we can adapt in time to secure our future. Dehiscence is a Toronto based, multi-media artist whose main subject matter is the human form. Her artistic process stems from a desire to transcend the prejudices and stereotypes that are so commonly associated with our external physical traits and to highlight social factors which impact human rights, inclusion and equality. She started experimenting with synthography in 2018 and has been using it since 2021 as part of her process to edit and manipulate her collages or digital paintings.
