"Punch Card Output: [Tears in Rain] is a digital piece that explores communication between humans and machines. I was entranced by the ideas of how digital communication has separated us from human interaction. The IBM 1401 and a funeral for it in Iceland inspired the feelings behind what I wanted to say in code. "Tears in Rain" is a monologue from the 1985 movie "Blade Runner", the text is as follows: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die." I thought this perfectly encapsulated the melancholy feeling of humans and machines interacting with each other. The famous monologue from Blade Runner was typed into an IBM 1401 punch card, and then the resulting pattern was overlayed on a digital canvas in Photoshop.
