In 2015, I embraced the title of artist, marking a crucial point in my journey. As a self-taught Afro-American artist from Harlem, my work reflects a rich interplay of deep emotion, critical analysis, and instinct. My creations are not merely artistic expressions but dialogues that engage with the complexities of identity, culture, and personal experience. Growing up in Harlem's gritty environment as an “alternative kid” before it was widely celebrated in urban culture, I have lived at the intersection of evolving trends and traditional roots. My early obsession with Pokémon, Marvel comics, and anime continues to influence my work, shaping a unique visual language that bridges popular culture and artistic expression. Initially drawn to fashion design, I pivoted to visual art as a more direct means of self-expression, particularly when resources for design were limited. My focus shifted to integrating Afro-American culture and our historical struggles into my art, exploring how these elements intersect with contemporary civilization. My work serves as a medium for discussing and reimagining our collective narrative, using art as a conduit for understanding and connection. Whether through visual art or prose, my aim is to communicate the intricacies of my experiences and insights. My art is a form of dialogue, a way to convey the depth of my inner world and engage with the broader discourse on blackness and its place in our shared history.
