Description: “The Emergence of Consciousness 5614836_2” This is one cell in the series “The Emergence of Consciousness”. Like a tiny rainbow, it is a refraction pattern made by a water droplet in a window screen. The individual cells created a larger pattern, but every cell is unique. You can see more cells as well as the composite image with full descriptions under their names. The numbers in the name refer to the row and line numbers in the original composite image. The asymmetric placement is the way it was originally. This image illustrates two principles that have guided my work since the beginning: Nature itself is an amazing artist; and Beauty is everywhere; we need only look for it. For this image I was influenced by other experimental photographers such as Man Ray. I'll be adding other images in the series as time permits. The special limited edition is printed by HD Chromaluxe®, a dye transfer process onto special coated aluminum which produces exceptionally vivid colors. It comes complete with a gallery mount hanger, which makes it project from the wall slightly in a stunning display. Whether or not this image makes you ponder the nature of consciousness, you can appreciate it for its own sake and put your own meaning to it. That, after all, is art. My hope for you is that this image will inspire you to enrich your life by seeking and finding beauty in unexpected places.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
