ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is about two close but not so close friends. Their friendship seems to come out of necessity for Barney the goat. Out of the nine plus horses on my sister's farm Barney seemed to gravitate to Micky for protection. Always together but a distance apart.The idea for this mixed media piece came from photos I took of the two of them together . When I snapped this photo of them I thought of "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. They are two stoic figures on an American farm. I used Post Impressionist and Modern ideas to create this work. Barney is smaller in this work then in real life. This is to make him not as significant as Micky. In other words Barney wants protection and tends to want to hide. Micky is his protection. Using mixed media such as pastel, brush and ink for line and gouache soften up the work.
