ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Our Spirit also looks back and sees Loya. The Native's call Sentinel Rock "Loya." Loya the Indian maiden tragically fell to her death from the top of Sentinel Rock while gathering. In this illustration Loya is holding a precious animal spirit and standing by the "Sad Animal Spirit." Each year many wild animals are killed and injured by park guests. Usually because they are driving to fast. Sometimes our park bears have to be euthanized because they have become accustomed to eating human food (carelessly left out by campers). I think that is why our animal spirit is so sad! I hope you have enjoyed this Halloween tale and the illustrations. I also hope that during these very difficult times you will stay safe and healthy, and keep your Spirits Up!

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
