In many countries, this hawk is protected, the species is even listed in the International Red Book. Nevertheless, the tropical forests of Central and South America, where harpies live and breed, are actively being cut down today, which adversely affects the species diversity of this region. The harpy is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. The largest individual recorded in captivity, weighed about 12 kg. Harpies - the official symbol of the state of Panama, the image of a bird is adorned with its coat of arms. Today, the population of South American harpies has about 50,000 individuals, but continues to decline. The main reason is the destruction of forests where these birds are used to nesting.
