ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was inspired in making this work by the mystery of water and how it relates to awareness. I was lead to this contemplation by the work of Carl Gustav Jung with symbols and mandalas. I was also influenced by one of my professors at California State University Chico Richard Hornaday. Richard was fascinated by the subject of awareness. Our art advanced study group would stand on the campus walkway watching people go by while quietly contemplating our awareness of our environment with Richard quietly coaching us. In a way this work also expresses my respect of the mystery of animal awareness.

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
