Palimpsest, hands, feet, and legs Print

Among my many fears was a terror of drawing hands. I was also afraid of drawing feet. I overcame this by sitting myself down and drawing them, and not giving a damn how well I drew them. Contempt for your subject is very freeing, and I soon became as proficient as you see here. (If you think these are poorly drawn it simply indicates how little you know about Art.) This is more than a drawing; it is what's called a "palimpsest". When Gore Vidal titled a book Palimpsest I suddenly wanted to use the word, so I am using it here. "pal·imp·sest | ˈpaləm(p)ˌsest | noun; a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain • something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form: Sutton Place is a palimpsest of the taste of successive owners." This, to clear up any confusion, is not a drawing of Sutton Place. Layering things produces surprise. Some of these even look a little like those mythical beasts which start out as one creature at one end and wind up being something quite different at the other. If you decide this belongs on your wall in a frame I will be surprised, but also curious to know what you like about it. Taste in Art is so subjective.
