About The Artwork

During my College days my buddies and I would go down to the coast after a short day, or on weekends, to dive, fish and spearfish off the South African coastline. We were a crazy bunch who loved the sport. We often ate whatever we caught on the day. Cooking in cast-iron pots over hot coals, shellfish, lobsters and mussels that we had ourselves taken from the ocean, or grilling gully shark & other tasty fish we had caught. However, on the days nothing was caught and hunger settled in, we would take the left-over pilchard and squid bait we had used to catch fish with, cook it all up and make a meal of it whilst enjoying strong alcoholic drinks. On one occasion, I alone managed to prepare and eat everything after consuming too much alcohol, whilst my friends who had left me in charge of starting the fire and preparing the leftovers, continued fishing. I became the brunt of endless jokes, given the nickname "Who Ate the Bait". In pubs or at University parties, my friends would sing aloud... "Who ate the bait? was Rob that ate the bait, now he's no Fish-mate of ours". Good memories! In The Fisherman, I depict what I might have looked like arguing and protesting my innocence against accusations of having eaten up all the bait. I was however.....guilty!

The Artist Robin James Hauser AKA 'RAUSDASHAUS', is the youngest of three Brothers. He was born in Chester, England to a South African Father and British Mother. In 1970 his Family relocated from Blackpool back to South Africa where he spent 33 wonderful years. He now resides with his Wife and Daughter in Germany. Hauser is a self-taught Artist and Musician. He grew up in a loving, Evangelical home environment surrounded by Music, Art and Sport, in all three of which he was active throughout his childhood and adolescent life. Hausers Artwork, he says, " stems from my crazy childhood imaginations, a love for life with its little eccentricities, my Spiritual walk and my past physical addictions ". It is his Spirituality, his humor, and the years of growing up amid apartheid and the post-apartheid era that drive his inspiration and keep him positive and humble. A belief that 'Awareness' is substantially more effective when presented visually, reflects through the nature of some of his Art. Hauser primarily works with Black ink, markers, fineliners and at times in some colour, using a mix of alcohol and Acrylic paints on fine Art paper. "Black has one very powerful and important attribute for me", says Hauser, "In that Black affords me the same clear, emotional, Spiritual and visual sharpness that my Musical composition does in order for me to express myself. I believe that Black is a necessary and active ingredient if you will, in purposefully highlighting and complimenting any medium, as do natural shadow and light." The Artists work is clean-cut and modern, fresh, often bright and sometimes dark in nature. "Somewhat obsessive compulsive at times", says Hauser jokingly.
