The Woman Who Reads Print

I was going to call this artwork: "Donna che legge", in Italian but then, while looking for a good translation in English I found a book about Coco Chanel called "The woman who reads" and I liked the idea of calling one of my artworks after a book that celebrates a great woman and the influence reading had on her groundbreaking work. So we are now looking at "The woman who reads" an oil pastel on paper inspired by a scene I saw during a day trip to Brighton. I was living in London at the time, and drawing from the photographs I took then always fills me with joy and brings back nice memory of a time when I was happy and inspired. Everything in UK was new and fresh to me and I wanted to celebrate almost everything through my art. London was also the place where I discovered Sennelier oil pastels, a medium new to me at the time, but that it is now one of my favourite tools to create and celebrate what I see around me. I love visit British seaside towns, coming from a small town near the Amalfi Coast, I was fascinated to meet a completely different way to live the beach and enjoy the sea. A woman reading is such a romantic and powerful sight. I wanted to celebrate this especially in these days when we hear news about women that cannot live their lives at their fullest, just because of their sex. There are still so many fights to be fought and, being an artist and a feminist, I feel like it is my duty (and my call, and pleasure) to shine a light on something that might seem trivial and unimportant, but that is, on the contrary, still something that not everyone can do. I hope this artwork will transport you by the sea, enjoying a tranquil time on the beach, thinking about how lucky we are if we can just sit and read anywhere we please and enjoying one of the greatest pleasure in life. This, like all the artworks from this series, has been treated with two to three layers of fixing spray; nonetheless I advise to promptly frame it with a glass too, to protect it from the dust. The artwork will be shipped rolled in a tube, I recommend to take it as soon as possible to a framer, to professionally flatten it back and to provide a frame with a glass, as the oil pastel needs to be protected from the dust.
