Felix Gephart’s drawings overwhelm the viewer, and not just because of their sheer size. His gloomy, tragicomic pictures are shocking and fascinating at the same time. Gephart, one of Germany's youngest graffiti artists in the 1980s, studied in Münster, in Dortmund and later, thanks to a Fulbright scholarship, at the New York School of Visual Arts as well. Felix Gephart is hard to categorize: he is a figurative artist, draughtsman, satirical illustrator, painter and graffiti writer all in one. The whole range of his work includes seemingly literary and old master-like drawings that stand face to face with murals, landscape representations, portraits and surrealist mythological creatures. Large-sized illustrations and numerous detail photographs offer an insight into the powerful, thematically, stylistically and technically diversified oeuvre.
