About The Artwork

Tom is inspired by several recurring themes: sadness, dance, the female form, and music. He draws/paints almost exclusively on vintage pages from old dictionaries, sheet music, book pages, maps, etc., some of which are more than 100 years old. He uses India ink and ink wash, creating depth and emotion through the pureness of black and white. This is a picture of a dandelion blowing in the wind drawn on the Psalm 27 page of a 1865 Bible.

Sulbone is Tom Sullivan. Sulbone (pronounced sull-bone) is the nickname Tom received in college that stuck. He is a self-taught artist that began expressing himself through art in his forties -- a late bloomer. He could be referred to as an "emerging artist," one with no formal training but a compulsion to create; one who NEEDS to draw/paint as a creative outlet and form of expression, with the goal of connecting with others through moving and passionate art. Although he initially started drawing in pencil and then ink using crosshatching for shading, Tom now almost exclusively draws/paints using India ink on vintage paper. The paper may be old dictionary pages, sheet music, maps, etc. Most of the paper is 100 years old or more, making each piece he does a unique juxtaposition of the past and the present -- creating new out of old. The pages are repurposed to bring an emotional connection to his art. The pieces range in size from 8x10" to several feet in size. Tom is married to his loving and supportive wife, Angie, who is his inspiration and a patient and accepting soul. Tom and Angie have two sons, Riley and Christian, 23 and 19 respectively. They live in Lincoln, Nebraska with their two Great Danes, Seamus and Finnegan.
