Don't you hate descriptions of spiritual people that airbrush out their faults? Hagiographies that make prophets & saints into caricatures. As if we are dealing with a teflon object rather than a human who struggles so fiercely, who trusts himself so deeply, that eventually the veil that hides God from us is torn aside? This assemblage or Icon that evokes a bird soaring, is composed principally of 7 knives, 6 are pointed down or sideways, only one is upwards. And it points to the fact that with real seekers, real spiritualists, only a tiny but significant intent reaches towards God, the rest rages, scrambles and deals with the mundane. And yet because the one little piece sets its eyes on the heavens, the rest are repurposed towards transcendence. A true seeker does not war with his desires, ambitions, talents and skills, his humanity... He takes his earthiness as opportunity, his desires as fuel, his emotions as wings, he takes his totality and directs himself towards transcendence.
