My Inspiration We went on honeymoon to Thailand and we visited a butterfly farm. Here we encountered the most magnificent clouds of multi-coloured butterflies. When I viewed images of plastic marine pollution, these same images of butterflies came to mind as plastic bags ‘flew’ graciously in the sea. Process This was one of my first experimental pieces. It went on to inspire many other paintings. It is made from 25 different plastics and organic materials that I salvaged from my children’s old toys and from our nature walks. These were melted and painted to create this striking 3D piece. The primary colours I chose to paint with gives it an added power. It is a statement piece, representative of transformation, transcendence and man’s ability to solve problems given the correct supports. Hoping in the next decade we can learn to reconstitute plastic to make fuel and electricity.
