Blossoming is part of a series that analyses and explores Dejeneffe’s personal experiences during the pandemic. When living through a deadly global pandemic, it is easy to focus on all that is wrong, negative and hurting. However, in this artwork, Dejeneffe explores the healing power of self-care and being kind to ourselves. Inner work and unearthing the positives from the rubble of negativity is a prevalent theme throughout this series. This piece summarises this concept beautifully, using the delicate symbolism of florals to depict the notion that all we truly need is already within us. For all the worry and pain brought about by the pandemic, the artist notes how she is grateful for the stillness it brought upon the world, which allowed her to focus on her personal and professional growth. There is a touching narrative behind this work. The artist recalls that one day, when she was feeling particularly isolated and disheartened, she suddenly realised that she held herself in a tight embrace. The figure’s nude form and the way she holds her arm gently depicts this subconscious act of self-assurance. The only guaranteed constant in our lives is our body, our internal home, and we should treat it as such.
