Who is Elmo....and what is Elmoism? Elmo is an "apotropaion", a talisman created out of scrap paper - to be exact, manila envelope, for his head, old newsprint for his torso and brown paper (as in shopping bag paper) for his bottom or pedestal. The word Elmo is an old English term meaning protector. Elmo is distinguished by two large flat sky blue disks for eyes. Eyes indeed for an apotropaion deflects with his strikingly brilliant eyes all disasters, evil intents and malicious eyebeams directed at the innocent. This is, of course, an ancient perception of how mischief comes about. There are malevolent people who desire the ruin of the good! This primitive preoccupation with warding off evil forces is the earliest religious awakening. Man resides in a mysterious and, at times, a hostile world where spirits, demons and unfriendly men roam. As an artistic invention, Elmo is a "vehicle" for creative expression. This expression is no longer concerned with the kind of magic an apotropaion would have embodied in remote times. Elmo today is "irony" and "ironic man" as he moves about in the contemporary world discovers an affinity for "apotropaic man". Ironic man is educated in the arts and sciences and questions his world according to its ever- shifting paradigms: is the universe only matter? Or is mind the true basis of reality? This twilight soul of contemporary ironic man searches for expression and is not easily content with the glib and the superficial. The world remains a mysterious place and now that science has turned its gaze upon the mind, the twilight soul of ironic man confronts its apotropaic other and the two converse in a manner both penetrating and playful. This is Elmo and everything else becomes a kind of adventure in Elmoism.

David White (1945-2023): Unveiling the Unseen Canvases of a Metaphysical Visionary Archive of works: Biography: Born in the heartland of Indiana in 1945, David White's artistic journey unfolded in the quiet corners of Waukegan, Illinois, where he navigated the intricacies of his identity and delved into the uncharted realms of metaphysics. Graduating from Illinois College with a degree in metaphysics, White's early years were marked by an absence of formal art training, a void he filled with an unwavering passion for self-expression. In a clandestine artistic odyssey, White surreptitiously crafted over a large oeuvre of paintings, each a window into his soul. The ethereal Bottle Series stands as a testament to his unique perspective, transforming ordinary vessels into landscapes that echoed his profound philosophy. His canvas expanded into the chthonic landscapes, a vivid Fish Series, and a contemplative Monad Series, each brushstroke unveiling the depths of his introspection. A pivotal turn in White's oeuvre came with the creation of "Elmo," a character inspired by the enigmatic eye idols of Tell Brak, conceived to ward off the malevolent gaze. This manifestation of his struggle with identity and protection became an emblem woven into the fabric of his artistic narrative. The zenith of White's artistic revelation manifested in his final opus, "Plotinus' Quest." Through a series of self-portraits, he metamorphosed into the Platonic philosopher Plotinus, challenging entrenched philosophies with a palette of rebellion. This series became a poignant exploration of self and societal norms, a testament to White's courage in confronting the accepted doctrines. Despite the profound impact of his works, White's canvases remained concealed from the world, mirroring his personal struggles. The absence of formal art training was compensated by a mentorship from an older confidant, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and a friend of the influential Giorgio de Chirico. This mentorship became the crucible in which White's artistic identity was forged. In the twilight of 2023, David White left behind a legacy that transcends the limitations of canvas and paint. His unspoken dialogue with metaphysics and his fearless confrontation of societal norms are etched in every stroke, inviting the world to ponder the profound depths of an outsider artist who dared to question the boundaries of both art and philosophy.
