ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is an immature acorn (still green). The main loss of acorns prior to abscission from the branch comes from weevils. Each oak species tends to have its own species of weevil specializing on its seeds. Following mating, the female digs a hole through the seed coat and deposits her egg, the larva then hatching inside the acorn and eating the nutritious tissue. At maturity it tunnels out and then looks for a mate. It was not a pleasant childhood for the weevil: the diet was monotonous and the inside of the acorn slowly filled up with the larva's feces.
