ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The work "Organized Chaos" is part of a series where I have been looking for a balance between two types of order - a formal, rational, geometric order and a natural, organic or fractal order. With a background in drafting, geometry and architecture the formal geometric order was relatively easy. To be able to draw shapes that had the look and feel of organic shapes, as if they had been generated by naturally processes, took years of practice. Over nearly a decade beginning in the 2000s I filled sketchbooks with ink line drawings as I developed a vocabulary of organic shapes. At one point I started slipping a drawing of rectangles under the page to provide an organizing framework for the irregular shapes. Once I had created some line drawings in black ink that I liked I imported the images into Photoshop where I filled shapes with color and layered in geometric patterns I had also created in Photoshop. After creating the design I was first going to make a set of limited edition prints but learned too late that the ink I had used was not archival. I decided as an alternative I would let Saatchi art create archival prints for me.

I am a 61 year old artist who has been making art for most of my life. At age 14 I took my first mechanical drawing class and began using mechanical tools to make art almost at once and I continue to use mechanical drawing in my art to the present day. After High School I pursued a degree in Architecture with a minor in Fine Art thinking that I could make a living as an architect and support my art. Instead art became too important and I couldn’t bring myself to work in an architectural office. I then thought I might support my art by teaching. I went back to school and got an MA in The History of Art, focusing on geometry in South Asian temple architecture. After graduation my need to keep making art continued to interfere with my ability to hold even a part time teaching job. In the mid to late 2000’s I was able to build my own house and studio where I keep making art which is all I have ever really needed.
