About The Artwork

The Practice is a piece reflecting interwoven stories from the inner world and outer worlds of the artist. The process involves meticulous preparation, discovery, and articulation, as papers are methodically painted with stripes of gouache, or found and collected from childhood and beyond. Then, they are cut up and reassembled to become new patterns, beauty in chaos. The archetypal image of a butterfly emerges. The new patterns formed are both harmonious at times and in discord, a fractal of the internal processing of the artist's experience as she moves through the world.

Meghan DeRoma (b. Chicago, IL, US) is a visual artist and storyteller working in collage, painting, sculpture, and bookmaking. Blurring the lines between narrative, representation, and abstraction, DeRoma focuses on the archetypal symbols and themes of the intricacy and nuance of human relationship—our relationship to Self, other humans, the “other”, (wo)man’s relationship with nature, and our own inherent wildness. Overlaying themes include curiosity, gestural flow, and a sly-smile approach to obscured symbolism and playful mixed metaphor. Her process involves discovery and articulation, using her hands and organic materials, many of which have an inherent history, to imply a sense of ethereal nostalgia, familiarity, and memory’s edge. DeRoma received her BFA in Sculpture from Miami University, Oxford, OH. She has done continuing education coursework in the arts at the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia University, Chicago, and creative writing at Harvard University under film director Catherine Eaton. She is an artist member and curator at Dorado 806 Projects in Santa Monica and lives and works in Venice, CA.
