ABOUT THE ARTWORK

What You Look Like When Sometimes we disappear. We pick up our repressed memories, our obtrusive thoughts, our checkered pride and we wear them as fashion, as masks. Something to breeze through the excruciating realities of urban living. Then while we are at it, we wish to be seen. To be called out from our self-inflicted delusions and be loved without inhibitions. This painting discusses the rigors of finding one’s true identity in a plethora of opinions available in our modern world. It is a call to truth. Truth and acceptance.

Brahms Oluwaseun Animasaun is a visual artist, Fashion Illustrator/designer and Graphic Designer based in Abuja, Nigeria. He is compulsively inspired by the strength, complexity and fragility of the human mind and how he interacts with his environment as well as how that interconnectedness pushes and influences his nature and choices. His art seeks to expose the rigorous internal struggles that pervades the modern man as he seeks to etch out meaning from a rather pointless life. He found art auspiciously, while he was himself in a state of ruin, turmoil and on the precarious edge of suicide, which was a few months before he gained admission to study Entrepreneurship at the National Open University. After a transformative experience he had when he stepped into the studio the professional artist (Agbezin Dele George) he apprenticed with then. The epiphanic event, totally changed the trajectory of his life and gave form to all the nebulousness he was hitherto used to. He had finally found his one true love. However his itching inquisitiveness led him down the path of creating clothing designs that he would flip for profit to support himself. Before establishing a clothing business with a friend in 2013, which eventually folded up after 3 years. His new fascination with fashion got deeper as he took up a diploma in Fashion Design 2016 and then Digital Illustration Design in 2017. Mainstream Visual Art had taken a backseat but it was always at his core as he found ways to weave it into his new found vocation. He ultimately would return to it in 2018 after taking some hits, and was consequently in one of his lowest ebbs. It did its magic on him, and ended up churning out some of his most defining works till date. He from thence proceeded to experiment with photography and art direction before getting involved in his first group exhibition in 2021, a digital painting exhibition in 2022 and an online exhibition for NFT artists in 2023. Brahms loves to learn. For he believes learning to be akin to godliness. Music is his high and he loves good food too. He also believes Nigeria would one day live up its true greatness.
