About The Artwork

I have long been fascinated by tattoos and the way in which they express something unique about a person’s identity. This image is one of a series of works I have produced (many of them featuring tattoo pin-up girls). I photographed the tattoos and then digitally placed them in a new visual environment. It seemed to me that when separated from the person and placed in a new visual setting, they assume an almost iconic and powerful identity of their own. This particular work (available in a number of colour ways) was inspired by Mexican 'Dia De Los Muerto' (Day of the Dead) iconography. The artwork includes a number of tattoo images combined to form one single skull icon.

I have been a rock‘n’roll photographer and artist for over 40yrs. I was there at the start of Punk in the early ‘70s, documenting it from the side of the stage and and hanging with the likes of Paul Weller, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols. I've enjoyed many different creative paths like going Stateside to help set up a charity, spent time in India soaking up the culture and dabbling in interior design, created and manufactured a holistic range of beauty care products and an exotic oil based perfume. I have lived in Ibiza, Spain for the past 8 years making customised hats for many of the islands cool residents, DJ's and musicians… and now returned to my first love – Art. I have long been fascinated by tattoos and the way in which they express a persons personality and often tell stories about that persons life and development. Some years back I began experimenting with the idea of digitally removing tattoo images from the body and placing them in a new visual environment. In the main I concentrated on tattoo with glamour imagery. It seemed to me that when placed in new visual setting they began to assume an almost iconic and powerful identity of their own. I held a couple of successful exhibitions of my work in the UK and in Ibiza but my work with customised hats took off and my artwork was put on the back burner till now. My intention now is to further develop these as a series of work available as prints and I hope that these will find their audience not only amongst fans of body art but those others who will appreciate the power of these images.
