When I picture clouds, in my minds eye, I'm lying on my back in the grass looking up... except when I picture sunrise or sunset clouds; then, the self of my imagination, is sitting by water. Images of clouds have appeared in my artwork over the years, but I think this is my first time really focusing on the shapes of groups of clouds, like small flocks of sheep they can gather in groups, and this series of cloud silhouettes celebrates that aspect of clouds. The positive and negative spaces are explored with colour in or around the cloud silhouettes, and the backgrounds in this series feature colours of summer skies, dusk, dawn and sunsets too. This particular dusk and dawn coloured background was created with crayons on bristol board, in colours that reminded me of both dusk and dawn skies, and once I had a pattern of crayon I painted over with watercolour - the crayon acts as a resist, the wax displaces the watercolour, but the paint fills in the spaces where they crayon isn't - I really enjoy this specific interplay of media, the water resistant colour and the watercolor and the ways they combine and collaborate. I hope that these images evoke happy memories of welcoming a new day and the dawn light, or sending off a good day at dusk as twilight approaches.
