This drawing was done in one 20 minute pose. The Model is another favorite. A musician and martial artist, she often poses with her Kendo Stick. The linear and foreshortening reminds me of my favorite German Artists Klimt and Schiele.
I am a traditionally trained artist and designer. I have been making life drawings since art school. Drawing is my meditation. Painting becomes more transformative if the drawing its based on is compelling. Digital tools are gradually transforming the way art is created. I bought an iPad Pro with an apple stylus and tried it out for life drawing. It is quite amazing. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Size is the only limiting factor. I wish i had one measuring 18 x 24"!. Its flexibility, spontaneity and the softwares (procreate) facility to mimic traditional media without the mess and toxic fumes. I also saw a David Hockney show at MOMA with a bunch of paintings he did on an iPad Pro. Printed at large sizes they fit perfectly with his previous paintings. My next adventure is too use the iPad for studies, compositions and color to use them to return to Oil on Canvas.
Its impossible for me to not approach every new drawing and pose with a fresh sense of wonder. I love the challenge of drawing the form with out a lot of artificial posing and fake looking gestures. Instead I just focus on the drawing as a tool of discovery.
