About The Artwork

For a considerable stretch, I've been veiling the intricate challenges of my autism behind a mask—an almost involuntary reflex that has become second nature. This automatic response has proven stubbornly persistent. However, a recent, seemingly mundane encounter sparked a profound realization. In a casual moment, someone extended step-by-step instructions to navigate the process of ordering food at a restaurant, lifting the customary weight of appearing effortlessly competent. This small gesture served as a jolt, catapulting me into a stark realisation of my own humanity and the diverse needs that accompany it. While it might sound peculiar to acknowledge special needs as someone on the autism spectrum, the truth is, for much of my life, I remained oblivious to my neurodivergence and the unique requirements it entails. In a sense, I had deceived myself into believing I mirrored those without neurodisabilities. The revelation of my limitations, however, was met with a remarkable act of kindness. Someone took the initiative to address my specific needs, infusing the discovery with a touch of golden compassion. It was a pivotal moment that shattered the illusion of conformity, ushering in an acceptance of my neurodivergent self and the appreciation of the kindness that accompanies understanding. The feeling that accompanied this understanding is beyond words. It's an indescribable sense of relief and validation, a recognition that, despite my differences, my needs are legitimate, and having them acknowledged is an act of profound kindness that goes straight to the heart.

Most of these artworks were created several years ago, creatively processing the early days of learning later in life; I was Autistic (among other brain differences), and the challenges I faced when I made adjustments in my relationships based on my neurobiological differences and diverse needs. The digital artworks were created for a podcast my friend and I had together, where we unpacked our experiences as neurodivergent humans. My approach involves asking probing questions specifically created to uncover complex traumas. I developed a method of self-inquiry and introspection designed to bring awareness to one's inner world. By delving into my subconscious and exploring the reasons behind my choices, beliefs, and emotional responses, I essentially acknowledge and understand myself at a deeper level. This self-awareness is crucial in personal growth, healing, and making positive changes. I work with paint, pencil, ink, spray paint, recycled substrate, fabric, clay, and vintage materials to assist the self-understanding, acknowledging and positive change process. My work involves asking, waiting, watching, quiet listening, inner knowing, storytelling, memories and subconscious answers.
