ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From nature's grandeur, we draw strength and inspiration as we draw breath. Its all-encompassing beauty surrounds us, and we can lean on it like a familiar shoulder. Day or night, it can dazzle and delight our senses. Just a stroll, aimless or with purpose, in solitude or in company, rewards our time and attention with wonder and insight. My work in these small pieces shows the untroubled, undeveloped spaces that frame our civilization. It was changing long before we began to develop, and it changes with us now. Each image is an ephemeral snapshot of a permanent world.

The Verity of Painting – My Story I came quite by accident to art school, but there I determined that art would be an integral part of my life. I studied painting at the Art Academy of Latvia and in Florence’s Libera Accademia di Belle Arti. I like the truth in paintings. They are conversations without words. My interest in me is unbroken. By using myself as an image, I can be truthful – I can speak of what I have witnessed and felt. But I do believe that a person is not alone – we have someone next to us, someone guiding the painter’s hand. In painting “Angels” I took inspiration from the master Giotto, whose contrasting colors speak beautifully to me. Some things can only be said in black and white. In my works I will also be expressing upon the fascinating power of nature, with its green variety and deciduous ornaments, from which is drawn every animating breath. I like a great spectacle of form, juxtaposing design with essence, mind with spirit. Design favors the sturdy, dislikes the round, likes symmetry, and does not like asymmetry. But nature, like Giotto, finds a place for the imperfect things.
