About The Artwork

A landscape blending memory and imagination. I have been to Buckhorn CA but as it was some time ago my recollection of the details are somewhat hazy. However, the image struck a chord with me and represents the feeling I had inspired by that particular part of the Californian landscape. The painting is signed on the reverse with full signature and year, and signed with initials on the front. I am selling the painting unframed as a rolled canvas, for ease and safety of transport and to reduce the shipping cost. It will be shipped packed in a secure tube.

I am a figurative painter and my inspiration comes mainly from Bali where I spend as much time a possible, painting landscape and figure studies. Recently I've been revisiting abstraction which I used to enjoy in my student days. What I've found is that it's all too easy to do abstraction badly and extremely difficult to do well. I have always loved landscape and aim to capture something of the genius loci (spirit of place) in paint rather than the purely topographical. Artists of the romantic school (early 1800's) liked what they called the Sublime in nature, the raw and overwhelming power of nature. Shock and awe. What if the Sublime is in a less intimidating mood? as Peter Schmidt one of my art school teachers said “in a room full of shouting people, the one who whispers becomes interesting”.
