Painter Doraté Muller’s life story illustrates the adage that we all are the sum of our experiences. Born in Germany, she spent her childhood in the Philippines, with its brilliant sunlight and jungles exuberant with multi-toned greens. Later her family left for China, where she was exposed to both the vigor and the subtleties of color in the local silks and other fabrics. When the family returned to Dusseldorf it seemed only natural for her to study textiles and textile design. In the United States she broadened her focus, taking a degree in interior design from the Rochester Institute of Technology. From her earliest days through young adulthood, she had been influenced profoundly by color and design. Part of her early training as a painter involved close study of classical and modernist masterpieces in American and European museums. Doraté’s lifelong fascination with color pulled her toward abstraction and it has become the focal point of her work today. It is her sensitive treatment of color, her adventuresome use of materials and her sure hand with collage that set her abstracts apart. Doraté Muller is a graceful creator of sumptuous surfaces.
