“Abstracted Sculptural Trees”, acrylic on canvas, 40 x 40 cm (15.7 x 15.7 in.) was made shortly after I finished my previous painting, “Sculptural Trees” — both part of my Forest Series. I had been exploring the colours and forms of intertwining trees in my earlier work and I knew upon its completion that I wanted to continue developing that specific subject matter by focusing on one detail of the intertwining trees in a simplified and abstracted manner. “Abstracted Sculptural Trees” depicts a close-up view of twisting trees in winter, inspired by a walk I took in the Belgian coastal town of De Haan. The lines and shapes of the trees and their branches are flattened and the colour patches are simplified, forgoing much of the detail I had included in my earlier painting. Light and dark greens, purples, and browns depict the earth and foliage against which the trees emerge. I have been exploring painting in solid colour patches, emphasizing shape, in small areas in earlier works. In “Abstracted Sculptural Trees” flattened and expansive colour and shape became my main focus. A certificate of authenticity (COA) is included with the purchase of this painting.

Belgium
Laura K. Smith (1989) is a Canadian-born landscape painter based near Antwerp, Belgium. From a young age, Laura drew and painted with her grandfather (‘Opa’) and was inspired by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art movements she learned about in school. In Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium, Laura studied Studio Fine Arts, Art History, and Art Theory, and earned a Ph.D. in Literature in 2018. Laura has worked in academia and as an art consultant, gallery assistant, and researcher, for internationally renowned art institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum and Colnaghi, the first commercial art gallery in the world. She is now pursuing her own painting practice professionally. Peaceful, joyful, strong, colourful, dream-like, and haunting are some of the ways in which Laura’s paintings have been described. Using acrylic on canvas, Laura paints colourful landscape scenes of her home country of Canada and her new home country of Belgium with the aim of sharing the joy that she experiences in the practice and appreciation of art. More recently, Laura has started working in watercolour. Complementary to her painting practice, Laura writes about her process and inspiration in her blog, available on her website.
