ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Encaustic (Beeswax, Damar Resin & Pigment) on Cradled Wood Panel. In the ‘Life Signs’ series, the paintings are symbols that people see everyday but whose name can have a double meaning. After viewing these pieces, the symbols seen in life, are forever perceived differently.

Cindy Lesperance is an award-winning visual artist who resides and works out of her studio in the NW suburbs of Chicago.                 She is President of FUSEDChicago – a Chicago based organization of Midwest artists who work in encaustic, a member of the Northwest Area Arts Council, and the David Adler Art Center.   Her art has been exhibited and has earned awards in many juried shows, galleries and museums throughout the Chicagoland area and across the country.  She has been the featured artist in Encaustic Arts Magazine, Winter Edition 2017 and ACS Magazine and on the cover of the January 2019 edition of the Journal of Financial Service Professionals.   Her work is displayed in private and public collections throughout the nation and is on view as part of the permanent collection of the Encaustic Art Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  ARTIST STATEMENT I love spending time in nature, traveling, and learning about other cultures:  their art, traditions, and architecture.  Always aware of color, pattern, and texture, these experiences are inspiration for my work. I usually get inspiration for a piece long before it’s started. I think about it, sketch and play with the idea. Seldom does the finished piece resemble the sketch exactly but somehow it prepares me to work. Work begins with a time of centering and spiritual connection. Once begun, I let the piece dictate the direction it will take. Always assessing what I’ve done and deciding what is needed next. It’s a strange phenomenon that while working on one piece I am often thinking about the next. It’s like my brain has to process the idea before it can be brought into reality then once the work has started, it is completed by the subconscious working intuitively, organically, and the conscious brain moves on to thinking about the next project. I work in encaustic and incorporate my signature technique, of meticulously applying small droplets of medium (a combination or beeswax, resin and pigment), one-by-one to the surface of the painting, using a special process I developed that fuses the drop to the painting underneath. The overall effect produces a tactile pattern that captivates the viewer and entices them to touch.
