This painting was inspired by Picasso’s “The Tragedy,” and by a day at the beach when a storm seemed to be approaching or departing, a raft in the distance seemed to be drifting in or out, and the threat of loss seemed equal to the hope of renewal. In the painting, the raft looks empty, and the posture of the man on the beach suggests despair rather than hope – but not necessarily.
