ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Afro Punk was the first of the two part series that tells of self love, self care and accepting who you are in a time where you’re expected to conform. Don’t do it! This work was created in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. I found myself with the opportunity to create something bold and powerful. Something that would portray the message I wanted without an explanation. Something I’d been nervous about doing. I gathered my pallet knife and the boldest color paper I could think of and went to work. I used a gallery wrapped, double primed canvas because I knew that I was going to be piling a lot of paint on the canvas. It was invigorating and I absolutely love the result. I hope you do as well. Hardware and wire are included for ease of display.

I am a Kansas City Native, raised majority of my adolescent and teen years in Texas. I excelled at many art forms as a child. Some of the primary mediums used were charcoal and etching. I wasn’t aware that art could be a career so I worked in different corporate fields, undoubtably unfulfilled. After being laid off at twenty-eight, I went back to one of my many creative avenues doing natural hair. I also picked up a paintbrush again and It wasn’t terrible, to my surprise. I explored the benefits of both oil and acrylic medium and settled in with the latter. Painting was purely therapeutic at the time so I kept at it, getting better with time. I am notably known for the vibrancy and strong features in my portrait work. Texture is very integral in the creation of most of my canvas art as well. The global pandemic of 2020 and my mothers cancer diagnosis inspired me to go even more bold in color, shining a bright light in the midst of so much uncertainty. Throughout the years my creativity shifts and flows as life happens. It’s been a journey and very rewarding to hear and see how my work resonates with its viewers.
