ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting is inspired by a tree on Canyon Road in Santa Fe I call the Goddess Tree. It is a stunning, towering cottonwood that stands out on a road famous for its art. I imagine this is the kind of tree a person could worship as was common in ancient times. I also believe that we have much to learn from the more-than-human life we share this life and planet with.

Jessi Cross is a painter and printmaker working in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Jessi attained her BFA in Printmaking from Maine College of Art in 2000 and her MA in Art Therapy from Southwestern College in 2007. Raised by an artist in rural Maine, she made art throughout childhood when not in the forest, attended life drawing classes in high school, and was involved in public arts projects and gallery events in New England. Since 2003 Cross has lived in New Mexico. She paints with gouache and ink and creates block prints. She has shown in multiple community settings and has engaged in community murals in Maine and New Mexico. Cross is a recipient of the 2023 Artist Grant on Water and Scarcity through the City of Santa Fe, culminating in a solo exhibition and several talks about her process with the project. She has recently shown work in Light & Art Space Gallery in Silver City, NM, Art Mozaik Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, and Mariposa Gallery in Albuquerque, NM. Her works are done on paper.
