ABOUT THE ARTWORK

January in Spain is when the first of the almond blossom makes an appearance, and it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of the changing of the seasons. In January, we are often blessed with clear blue skies and sunshine but it is always chilly! Despite the welcome sign of these lovely little white and pink flowers, we know that we still have to get through February and March, at least, until we see the real signs of Spring. Against the soft background, I used many short marks in red and yellow using paint sticks before applying layers and glazes. This is the second of a pair of paintings inspired by the arrival of the blossom.

Ian Rutter was born in Germany and grew up in Cyprus and the United Kingdom. He went to school in Northern Ireland where he realised that his passions lay in the creative arts and literature, studying Art, French and English Literature. His degree is in Architecture, but he decided to start to earn a living rather than continue with his post-graduate diploma. His subsequent career was varied and included 10 years as the Creative Director of a marketing agency, several years educating businesses on the commercial benefits of Inclusive Design and as a radio producer, presenter and voiceover artist. In 2016, Ian and his husband moved to Spain to pursue their creative interests, and Ian started to paint again. He was introduced to Abstract Landscape Painting in Acrylics during a course he and his husband organised, and he immediately fell in love with the medium and the freedom of abstract representation.
