Artists have been painting still life for thousands of years. A still life painting is a piece that features an arrangement of inanimate objects as its subject. Usually, these items are set on a table and often include organic objects like fruit and flowers and household items like glassware and textiles. An advantage of this subject matter is the artist is in control of the choice and arrangement of objects, and particularly of the light. In this painting ‘Blue Still Life’ I’ve experimented with using different mediums of charcoal, crayon, acrylic paint and oil paint. I’ve also limited the colour palette. Edouard Manet once called still life “the touchstone of painting. Still life painting has been popular across cultures, and periods of history, and art movements. From the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and the Egyptian, during the Middle Ages, and right through to the impressionists, post impressionists and contemporary art, this genre has remained popular with artists.

Australia
AUSTRALIAN ARTIST I am an Australian artist working in Adelaide, South Australia. I paint mostly in oil, but occasionally use acrylic paints. Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, flower paintings and abstract paintings are included in my repertoire of work. INSPIRATION FOR MY ART As an Australian artist, my inspiration comes from whatever is around me at a particular time. As an example, following a recent trip to the mid north of South Australia, I produced a series of landscape paintings, which include the beautiful Eucalyptus trees and flowers from local gardens. HISTORY My original study was textile design and Adelaide's School of Art and Craft. I then worked for 20 years in various forms of art and fashion. But, in 1997 I followed my other passion, natural health. Since arriving back in Adelaide from Sydney in 1999 I have worked full time as a Naturopath. However, in recent years I have devoted much more time to my painting. Moving full circle, as a practicing Australian artist. This includes participating in exhibitions. Also fulfilling my love of learning by continuing to study and improve my art practice, wherever and whenever I can. Over this period I have attended many and varied art courses and workshops in this time including Peter Bok at Bapea Art School, Liana Vargas Cat Leonard, and Krystina at Splashout Studio, Chelsea Lehman, Trena Everuss and Nona Burden at Adelaide Central School, John Lacey, Ruby Chew, Sophie Hann, Gerhard Ritter, and Deborah Trusson. WHERE ELSE TO FIND ME I regularly post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
