ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Domestic Dystopias are a series of paintings that take a dark and humorous look at our lives at home. There are evident classical references in composition and colour. The gesturing figures and cherubic small children with washing machines and televisions tell everyday stories -with a twist. This painting also features a 'babel tower' and some subtle writing. It is more surreal with less classical reference than many of the other paintings in the series - with a flying mermaid, a bath, and lots of crazy babies or 'putti' causing chaos. These paintings are politically motivated and come from personal experience. There is light and dark, ambivalence and invisibility in mothering and 'home work' - stories that are often not shared in Western ideal-critical culture.

Delpha Hudson has a studio in Bread St. Penzance, Cornwall. She is an alumni of Falmouth College of Art with an MA from Dartington College. She has always painted along side performance and film work that has been shown internationally and around the UK. She has had work commissioned for Tate St Ives and shows her paintings at many galleries around the country. Hudson has developed her own poetically resonant, and aesthetically individual studio style, using unusual materials like bitumen paint. Her work aims to present the self as fluid and transformative, and calls for a significant change in the way we value to women and carers in a post-COVID-19 world.
