About The Artwork

It`s bargaining time in the marketplace. You`ve hardly had time to look around and already merchants are shoving objects in your face. ``Lady, lady,`` someone calls, ``come, come. Nice sweater. Good for husband.`` A small boy nudges your arm. ``Look,`` he whispers, holding out a sweaty necklace that looks factory-made. ``Very old.`` The merchant with the doll is back again. ``Ninety cupkees,`` he says. ``For you, 90 cupkees.`` ``No, no,`` you say. You know you want something--a souvenir, a gift, an example of local art--but it`s all so confusing. What exactly do you want? What are these things worth? Should you bargain? How should you bargain? In many countries shopping is a complicated art. You can`t simply walk into a boutique or department store. Instead, you have to engage in a bit of verbal dueling, a.k.a. bargaining. You have to know where to bargain and when to bargain. For example, you can bargain in many places in the Orient, but not in small Mexican towns and villages, but not even in department stores.

Caster was born in 1986 in Benin; he was raised by his Father and Grandparent due to the unexpected passing of his birth Mother. Caster's a young artist of special talent. With no formal artistic training, he has managed to depict palpable imagery from his memory with honesty and clarity. His dynamic drawings and paintings are executed with flourish and verve. In the midst of a creative cycle of self-discovery, a world of youthful exuberance has emerged. Combining finesse with delicate energy, his paintings often reveal his journey into an inspired fantasy world based on his former home in Benin and Togo (West Africa). “Casters surprises and delights his audience by superimposing academic rules with colorful imagination. Thus, his "Artistique Main Noir" trademark or “nom de plume” which is French for Black Hand bringing a liveliness and bold originality that is seductive and even exotic to our frequently jaded kind of self-portrait, discovering a renaissance of images from within and opening up visual emotions for us." Stated by his mentor and one of his main inspirations; Mr. Arthur Secunda. Caster states, “What inspires me most is the unique view of my surroundings, Arthur Secunda’s artwork, and finally the people and the forces that exist within us. To me, this is an outward manifestation of what I put into my work; my work exposes my emotions, thoughts, feelings, fears, dreams and observations about life. I exhibit a sense of creativity and awareness with the taste of Africa, so as to bring viewers and admirers to the place where I came from, my background. I believe that every mistake that I may make in my Art is a sign from God to go back and learn, and grow from.
