Recently, I had the opportunity to watch videos of blind painters. I was so amazed to see the precision, the colors and the life in their works that I wanted to try to paint without seeing. The goal was twofold, both to feel what these painters can feel and to seek a purer emotion, without interference due to vision, which corresponds perfectly to a main goal of my research in abstract art. I started by painting the canvas in black and then I prepared three tubes of acrylic paint, one blue, one red and one yellow. I put them on my table, visualizing their location, and then I visualized my black canvas. At that moment, I was ready to start. I blindfolded myself with a scarf, focused on finding the image of my tubes and canvas. I took my palette knife in one hand, the tube of blue in the other and suddenly, I felt a sensation of doubt, almost an anxiety. I had lost my bearings and I was alone, desperately alone in front of this painting on which I did not dare to deposit my color. I focused again on the image of my black canvas and started painting. Little by little, I felt a sense of freedom, I felt that I was getting closer to this refined emotion that I have been looking for a long time. I was like in a dream, at once more true than reality and at the same time distant, impalpable. This sensation lasted all the time I was painting, but when I decided that my painting should be finished, I was again anxious. I did not dare to remove the blindfold, I did not dare to discover this work that I had felt but not seen. Will it correspond with the image I made of it in my mind ? Seeing it, the movements, the general equilibrium correspond to my idea but, the colors, which are the result of the mixture of the three primary colors, are a real discovery. This experience was very enriching , it allowed me to appreciate the luck that we have to see but even more the talent of these blind painters. It is certainly an experience that I will renew one day because , I have the feeling of not having completely managed to free myself from the vision with the eyes to replace it by that of the heart. This artwork is painted on a stretched canvas 61x50 centimeters. It is ready to hang without additional framing. Edges are painted in black. ***Please note the original is available on my shop.***

Thierry Vobmann is a professional French artist who lives in Brittany, the most westerly place on the European continent. In his studio, he creates paintings on canvas and sculptures in wood and metal. For more than ten years, he has devoted himself almost exclusively to abstract painting because he has set himself the goal of expressing everything that does not have a physical appearance such as sounds, smells, warmth, feelings, the wind ... He realized that finally most of the factors that govern our lives and our behavior were not visible but noticeable. Thierry's approach logically was to remove the image of the real to keep only the essential: the pure and universal emotion. During his first year of work in abstract expressionism as this style is commonly called, Thierry has developed his own style which is abstract but in which he slides as often as possible reminiscences of figurative techniques such as perspectives, shadows, lights. He constantly seeks the balance of volumes, textures, colors, movements in order not to disturb the expression of the feeling. His works are not smoothed. They are sometimes violent, colorful, and spicy, but always in order to accentuate the desired expressiveness. During this year of setting up, Thierry totally immersed in the construction of his art, declares that he began to make dreams he said “Sometimes, when I sleep, I receive as a message, a very precise vision of a work to paint. Everything is there, the visual, the title and regularly even the written description of the painting. So I wake up and look for paper and pencil to take notes or sketch because in the morning I will not remember anything. “ Thierry also states that it happened to him, when he was very calm and tired, because Thierry frequently paints at night, to make a painting that once completed, seemed totally foreign to him. He knew he had painted it but, his hand had been guided, at no time had he thought about what he was doing, he had done it. These dreams and the feeling of being assisted in his creation brought Thierry into the search for a universal energy, a vital energy that governs everything we know, that influences our life and our decisions. Thierry's evolution from the representation of the impalpable to universal energy has led him to the experience he is now leading. He seeks to voluntarily connect to these powerful external forces. This is what he calls "Blind painting experiment".
