Painting: Acrylic on Other.
Blue on White is a free-standing, 3-dimensional painting with mass, volume and magnitude which interacts with the space around it. This work is in reference to the built environment, and the ways in which structures are revered or abhorred. When creating this work, I considered how some structures are well cared for, and others are allowed to fall into disrepair. Deterioration often reveals many layers and the inner workings of a structure, the "soul" is exposed. The effects of time, the environoment, pests, vandalism, all give the building a new purpose. It is this transformation that I am concerned with. Whether it housed the sick, the old, families, businesses, places to gather, to eat, to get drunk etc, all contribute to our social commentary. As with most things that age, lose their shine or no longer function the way they once did, our blatant disregard for these things forces either complete transformation, or destruction.
