“Euclid alone has looked on beauty bare,” proclaims Edna St. Vincent Millay in one of her sonnets. Not at all “bare,” some of my geometric abstracts are clothed with loosely defined edges, texture and bold color, but most prioritize clarity and simplicity, dressed with linework or pattern and gradations of color. While Josef Albers and Piet Mondrian paid homage to the square and right angles, my shape of choice is the circle, symbolizing perfection, our earth, moon and solar system, even the atoms comprising the universe. Circles—rounded, enclosed, feminine shapes. In creating compelling paintings with a restricted image vocabulary, rounded, enclosed shapes feel protective, nurturing and complete. My expressive abstract paintings offer clarity and a meditatively calm kind of beauty by simplifying and idealizing the shapes that underly our existence. Emotional engagement enters softly.
