VIEW IN MY ROOM
This is the painting that I submitted for the final challenge of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2018. You read all about the experience on the blog on my website www.jengash.co.uk. I decided to focus my efforts on studying the underside of the pier, the “underbelly” as I started to call it. I made several studies in paint and charcoal as the light faded, loving the contrast between the dark underside and the fairy lights on top of the pier. It seemed to represent the face of Brighton we are presented with – the fun, bright, jolly side, against the dark, unseen, hidden side.

Winner of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year (2018), I am based near Bristol. My interests include: the landscape as psychology/ psychological backdrop; the fragility of children and teenagers; themes around engagement/disengagement in activities; abandoned play and leisure environments. I am also a bit of a geek and love the neuro and occupational science involved in the creative process.
