I love Gibraltar’s summer and my favourite beach is La Caleta, Catalan Bay. It still has that old fishing village feel and a strong family ambiente. We have a ‘tradition’ of eating afternoon tea (merienda) on the beach just as the sun starts to dip behind the towering peak of the Rock of Gibraltar. I was lying on the beach, right next to a family as they pulled out their delicious home-made food for their merienda – there was an air of excitement and anticipation about them so I had to shoot some pictures and rush back to start work on this new painting. I worked the back-ground in acrylic blue (to capture both the sea and sky) then drew in all the lovely details in charcoal. I decided to add some of the accent colours with more acrylic and highlights also in chalk/pastels. I really enjoyed this painting and plan to work on more like this, on our different beaches. In painting a limited colour palette and working mostly in charcoal, the deeper shadows of late-afternoon are more emphasised. It is not night, but the bright light of day is gone. This painting won a Highly Commended award in the National Celebrations Exhibition at The Fine Arts Gallery in 2018. Nehemiah 8:10 - Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Gibraltar
I am a passionate Gibraltarian artist who has been painting all my life. I find Gibraltar’s location provides great opportunities for fresh ideas. I have always enjoyed painting outdoors and participated in many competitions and exhibitions in Gibraltar, Spain and Italy. My first Highly Commended award was achieved in 1999 with the Heritage Trust and won 1st Prize in 2018, along with awards from the Fine Arts Association, The Spring Exhibition and the International Exhibition in Gibraltar. I also won the People’s Choice award at an exhibition in the Garrison Library for my painting “The Return”. My first commission was from Raffles Restaurant on Queensway Quay, in 1995, which was subsequently used for their marketing and have undertaken various large mural commissions in more recent years and assisted my son, Paul, in his artistic projects (including the street-art mural in the tunnel at Alameda Gardens and the MTV Musical Festival). In 2000 I was a founding member of the Fine Arts Association which operates from the Fine Arts Gallery in Casemates. An avid lover of all things God created and nature, I am a Christian Artist and exhibited my collection “For the Glory of God” at the John Mackintosh Hall, Gibraltar in July 2020 and at the Fine Arts Gallery.
